History

Martin Jacobo Thompson - Founding Father of the Argentine Coast Guard

Prior to the official date of the foundation of the structure - June 1810, in the vice-kingdom of Rio de La Plata there was a port service of Buenos Aires . After the beginning of the May Revolution and the War of Independence, the coast guard, already officially existing, received the first commander - Martin Jacobo (Jacob) Thompson ( Spanish Martín Jacobo Thompson ). Thompson, an Anglo-Argentinean who participated in repelling the British invasion of Rio de La Plata in 1806-07, was promoted to Port Captain ( Spanish: Capitán de Puertos ). In addition to him, other military and political figures of the country served in the coast guard - Matias Yrigoyen, Jose Matias Sapiola, Juan Bautista Azopardo, Francisco Erescano, Antonio Toll y Bernadette, Thomas Espora and others.

The modern Coast Guard was founded at the end of the 19th century on the initiative of the Argentine Senator, scientist Manuel Florencio Mantilla . In addition, in 1969, a reorganization was carried out in the structure. In 2010, during the presidency of Christina Kirchner , the Naval Prefecture was transferred to the Ministry of Homeland Security. This process was started back in 1984, after the fall of the dictatorship of the “ National Reorganization Process ”.

Service

Argentina Coast Guard

Two boats and a helicopter from the Coast Guard participated in the Falkland War 1982 [3] , a number of employees served on ships requisitioned by the Argentine Navy. After the successful completion of Operation Rosario , the PNA sent 2 German-built Mar Del Plata patrol boats to the Falklands - Islas Malvinas (GC-82) and Rio Iguazu (GC-83), where they were repainted in brown-green camouflage colors [4] . On May 1, near the Kidney Island, the HAS.2 Link helicopter attacked the GC-82 from the Elakrity frigate, resulting in severe damage to the boat [5] . Nearby the Argentineans requisitioned in the Falklands the ARA Forrest returned fire on a helicopter. Link received holes in the hull, engine, cockpit and fuel tank [6] [7] [8] .

On June 14, 2002, the Argentine coast guard ship Thompson (GC-26) thrice fired without warning the Russian fishing vessel Odoevsk . Argentines claim that Russians caught squid in the economic zone of this country [9] [10] .

In addition to border protection, the PNA is engaged in the fight against drug trafficking , rescue operations, and scientific activities.

Current status

PNA Office

Managed by the Coast Guard Department of the Argentinean Ministry of the Interior. As of 2010, the Coast Guard has 7 patrol ships, 2 large and more than 100 small patrol boats, 5 C-212 aircraft, 6 helicopters ( AS-565MA Panther , 2 AS-365 Dofin , SA-330L Puma , 2 Schweizer-300C ) [1] . It has its own special forces - the Albatros group. The unit patrols rivers, lakes, other bodies of water, and also near the coastline. Her fighters take part in operations to free and search for hostages, as well as detain criminals [11] . In service there are 6 ships, 64 boats, 7 aircraft and 11 helicopters.

The coming of the civilian government to power after the Dirty War led to the fact that from the 1980s to the present, the military and special services have been taken under tight state control. Funding was reduced, arms purchases were suspended. This affected not only the armed forces, but also the coast guard, which was transferred under the Kirchners to the Ministry of Internal Security.
