Biography
Born in a military family. Following the traditions of the clan, he spent most of his life in the army. As a result of studying history, he wrote his first drama Louis Ferdinand, Prince of Prussia. Another Unruh play, The Officers (1912), was a resounding success. The irritation of the Prussian military against the author forced him to resign. After the declaration of war in 1914, he again joined the army. He participated in the battles for Reims - the original version of his poetic “Duma” - “Before the Decision” (Vor der Entscheidung, 1914) arose here. Already during the first German victories he came to condemn the war, and then to the passionate denial of the existing social system. On the fields of Verdun the most powerful work of his transitional period was born - the prosaic tale of Verdun battles - “The Sacrificial Path” (Der Opfergang, 1916, 2 Aufl., 1919). Then, while wandering around the front, Unruh conceived the trilogy “Rod” and sketched the first part of it - the same name (Geschlecht). At the beginning of the revolution, he professed abstract republicanism and cosmopolitanism , prophesying death to the old world.
Unruh's social aspirations are built on a moral basis. Even in a brief period of sympathy with socialism, he could not come close to a genuine understanding of the catastrophe that shook Europe . In 1920, he completed the second part of the trilogy: “The Square” (Platz) and proceeded to the third (Dietrich). The first parts of the trilogy made, in spite of their abstractness, a huge impression in Germany . After the Garden of Roses (Rosengarten, 1923) and the play Heinrich von Andernach (1925), written on the millennium of the Rhine province , he was elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Literature (1926), which remained until the 1933 coup d'etat. . After a trip to Paris and London, he wrote a naive cosmopolitan book, The Wings of Nicky (Flügel der Nike, 1924). During these years, he imagined himself to be a prophet of social renewal, delivered speeches in Germany and abroad. Since 1933 he was in exile.
