Participation in beauty contests
Cooley became Young Miss North Carolina in 2000 and represented her state in the Young Miss USA 2000 contest, but did not make it to the finals. She took 11th place and could not get into the top ten. The very next year, she became Young Miss USA.
In 2004, she became the First Vice Miss of North Carolina, and also won the Miss Photogenicity title. The following year, Cooley again took part in the Miss North Carolina 2005 competition, in which she was able to win.
On April 21, 2005, she represented North Carolina at the Miss USA contest. In the preliminary round, she took 14th place and got into the 15 best, which go to the semifinals. Having successfully performed in a swimsuit and evening gown, she won the Miss USA title. On May 31, 2005, she took part in the Miss Universe contest, held in Bangkok , Thailand , where she was able to get into the top ten.
