In 1772, he published his translation of Elian, and in the same year he was elected a member of the Academy of Inscriptions. Since 1783, he has done much as a permanent secretary for the publication of unpublished manuscripts of the Paris Library, etc.
In 1800 he was appointed chief librarian of the national library, in 1823 he was elected to the French Academy. His works: “Rapport sur les progrès de l'histoire et de la littérature ancienne depuis 1789” (new edition 1870); Dissertations philosophiques, Eloges d'académiciens, Mémoires historiques, most of which are in the Journal des Savants et al.
