History
Spotsilwein County was formed in 1721 as a result of the separation of parts from Essex , King William and King and Queen counties. It got its name on behalf of the Governor of Virginia, Alexander Spotswood , one of the first explorers of the Shenandoah Valley : lat. sylvanus and English. sylvan , forest , correspond to English. wood , forest .
During the civil war , several companies were recruited for the Confederate Army in the district:
- Company "E" 9th Virginia Infantry Regiment (Mercer Cavalry)
- Company "A" (Washington Guards), company B (Fredericksburg Grays), company C (Gordon Rifles) and company "D" (Mount Pleasant Rifles), 30th Virginia Infantry Regiment [1] .
The district became the site of several major battles: at Chancellorsville , in the Wilderness , at Fredericksburg and the battle of Spotsilvane . Beginning in the fall of 1862, the district became virtually front-line, its territory was controlled by the Confederate army (until May 1864), and the north of Stafford County was controlled by the federal army. Almost the entire northern half of the county at that time was occupied by a deaf, impassable forest massif Wilderness .
