Botanical Description

Perennial herbaceous plants 25-150 cm tall, creeping underground shoots are absent [3] .

Inflorescence is a linear spike , the axis of which does not fall apart under the fruits ; spikelets are sessile or almost sessile, located one at a time, less often 2-3; flowers (2) 3-5 (7). Spikelet scales are lanceolate, elliptical, lanceolate-oblong, or lanceolate-ovate, with 3–9 protruding veins, without a pronounced keel. Lower floral scales are spinous or boneless, with obtuse triangular, hairy callus at the base [3] .

Distribution

They are found in extratropical regions of both hemispheres and in the mountainous regions of the tropics [3] .
