Biography

Jean-Baptiste-Louis Gresset was born on August 29, 1709 in the city of Amiens. He was brought up in the Amiens Jesuit College, then in Paris and several provincial universities.

He made his debut ode “Sur l'amour de la patrie” (1730), and in 1734 wrote his famous comic epic “Vert-Vert”, which tells the story of a devout parrot raised in a convent in elegant verses; the parrot is sent to visit the abbess of the neighboring monastery, but on the ship he eavesdrops on the conversation of the soldier’s company and upon arrival to the strict nun he greets her with the most selective words of his new repertoire.

In the same spirit, Gresse wrote a few more details: Le Carême impromptu, Le lutrin vivant, and partly La Chartreuse, in which the author makes unsuccessful attempts to philosophize. Touched by satire Gresse, the abbess of the monastery de la Visitation arranged for the poet, who belonged to the Jesuit order, to be exiled by his superiors to the town of La Flèche , where, out of boredom, he began to translate Virgil 's Bucolic.

In 1735, Jean-Baptiste-Louis Gresset came out of the order, began to lead a secular life, was a regular visitor to the salon m-me de Forcalquier. The tragedies and dramas of Gresse (Edouard III, Sidney) are unsuccessful and not scenic, but the comedy of his Le Méchant (presented in 1747) deserves attention. The intrigue is sluggish, the main character, causelessly evil Cleon is a type of fictitious and unnatural, but the saloon mores of the society of that era are faithfully conveyed and the then conversational tone is very subtly reproduced in style. Together with Péron's Métromanie, Le Méchant makes the transition from Moliere 's comedy to Beaumarchais's comedy.

In 1748, Gresse was elected a member of the academy, in which he gave speeches twice: during the reception of D'Alembert in 1754 and Ciouard in 1774, and both times he found a narrow clerical trend and hatred of all sorts of innovations.

In the last years of his life, Gresse fell under the influence of the clergy and publicly renounced (in an open letter in 1759) his literary work and poetry in general, for which he was severely ridiculed by Voltaire and Piron .

Jean-Baptiste-Louis Gresset died June 16, 1777 in his hometown.

In addition to these works, he also wrote "Le Gazetin", "Parrain Magnifique", "Les Pensionnaires" and "Le Laboratoire de nos soeurs". The complete works of G. were published by Fayole in 1803, by Renoir in 1811; fav. Sochi. published by Campenon (P., 1823). See about G.: Bailly, "Eloge de G."; Robespierre, "Eloge de G."
