Biography
Initially, he studied at the seminary, but refused spiritual education, moved to the lyceum of Dr. Francisco Machado in Dili, where he studied philosophy, political science, management and the Portuguese language. Then he served in the Portuguese army. In 1968, upon its completion, he worked as an adviser to the Timor-Leste Commission on Agriculture, then to the financial service, where he was responsible for financing civil servants.
In 1974, he became one of the founders of the Revolutionary Front for Independence of East Timor (FRETILIN) party, becoming its vice-chairman. In 1975, he played a significant role in the process of decolonization from Portugal and the proclamation of independence of East Timor in November 1975, he was appointed first Prime Minister of the country. However, nine days after this, Indonesian troops occupy East Timor.
Lobato is becoming one of the leaders of the resistance movement. In 1976, he was appointed commander of the armed forces FRETILIN, in 1977 - the chairman of the party. In 1977-1978 he was president of East Timor. By December 1978, the Indonesian army had destroyed up to 80% of the FRETILIN fighters, Lobato’s detachment was surrounded and he shot himself with the words “My last bullet is my victory” so as not to be captured by the invaders. According to other sources, was killed by the Indonesians.
Today, Lobato in his homeland is considered the most significant fighter for independence, a new international airport in Dili and the training center of the Armed Forces of East Timor were named in his honor.
