Biography
Herbert Spencer Jackson was born in New York in 1883 . He studied at Cornell (under J. F. Atkinson ), Harvard and Wisconsin Universities, then worked at the University of Delaware and the University of Oregon . Since 1916, Jackson worked at Purdue Agricultural Station in Indiana . In 1929, he became a Ph.D. and was appointed the first professor of mycology at the University of Toronto . Since 1941, Herbert has been the head of the Department of Botany at this university. There, Jackson studied the local species of smut and rust fungi, as well as various telephora . He was also the creator of the herbarium of the Department of Botany, by 1952, numbered 94 thousand samples. In addition to mushrooms, Jackson was interested in various varieties of irises . In the Canadian Botanical Gardens of Glendon Hall, he collected several hundred varieties. Herbert Jackson passed away on December 14, 1951 .
Herbert Jackson was a member and president of the Mycological Society of America and the Botanical Branch of the Canadian Royal Society.
