Kituri in the Caucasian War
On August 20, 1858, during the Caucasian War, Tsarist troops launched an assault on the village of Kituri, during which General Hippolyt Alexandrovich Vrevsky was mortally wounded [6] [7] . For heroism and bravery shown in this battle, many participants were awarded orders and medals, including:
- Order of St. George 4th degree (№ 10145 according to the list of Grigorovich - Stepanov):
- lieutenant-general (later adjutant-colonel) Nicholas Schlitter (1834–1877) [8] [9] ;
- Lieutenant Sheremetyev [9]
- lieutenant-general (later adjutant-colonel) Nicholas Schlitter (1834–1877) [8] [9] ;
- Order of St. Stanislav 3rd degree:
- the artist Theodor Gorshelt [10] (1829–1871) and others ...
Gorshelt witnessed and participated in battles between soldiers and mountaineers near Kituri and wrote a number of paintings on this subject [11] :
- "Storm of a village Kituri"
- "Carrying over the mountains of the wounded General Vrevskogo"
- "The ruin of the Lezginsky aul"
- "The flight of the Lezgin horsemen by Russian shots"
Here, in addition to Gorscheldt himself, an unknown Russian officer, an eyewitness to these events: on the way all the villages. It goes without saying that there were a lot of victims on our side when storming heavily fortified enemy villages and heights with debris, but if we take into consideration that the detachment was under fire day and night, we made few casualties. The most sensitive losses for the detachment were General Vrevsky and his chief of staff, colonel of the general staff Gardner. Both of them received mortal wounds when storming the Ilankhevo village of Kituri - the first one, and Gardner 11 gunshot wounds. ”
In August 1858, in the battle for the village of Kituri, the highlanders won a brilliant victory over the tsarist troops and Tushino militia under the command of Lieutenant General Hippolyt Vrevsky, who died on August 29, 1858 in Telav, in the Tiflis province, from a mortal wound received during the storming of the village of Kituri. He was buried at the Telavi Assumption Cathedral. The defenders of Kituri were represented by tindals, Elanhovtsy and Tsezami under the leadership of Naib Tsuntalala - Umarkhaji Toralasul from Tindi. Fatally injured naib, with severe burns, was seized by the Russians but did not survive ..
