History

The department at Penn has been known since the 5th century , but the first written evidence of it dates back to the Carolingian era. According to legend, the founder of the department was Patras , a disciple of Jesus Christ .

On March 15, 1252, the diocese was united with the diocese of Atri bulla Licet ea of Pope Innocent IV .

On June 1, 1526, Pope Clement VII Bull of Super Universas transformed her into the Vicar of the diocese of Chieti . In 1539 , at the request of Margarita of Austria , Duchess of Penne, Pope Paul III reassigned the diocese back directly to the Holy See .

After the founding of the city of Pescara , on July 1, 1949, Pope Pius XII, with a bull, Dioecesium circumscriptiones, joined the diocese of Penne to the diocese of Chieti , and the diocese of Atri became part of the diocese of Teramo . Reorganized in this way, the diocese received the new name of the diocese of Penne and Pescara, remaining directly subordinate to the Holy See.

March 2, 1982 by the bull Ad maiorem quidem of Pope John Paul II , the status of the diocese was elevated to the archdiocese - the metropolis with a new name - the archdiocese of Pescara Penne.

On May 31, 2010, the parish of Mary the Holy Mother of God in the faction (village) of Pretaro, in the commune of Francavilla al Mare, was included in the archdiocese of Chieti Vasto.
