The magazine was founded in 1940 by Arthur Lovejoy and was associated with the Society for the History of Ideas , positioning itself as "a space for interdisciplinary research." The magazine was supposed to be devoted to the world history of ideas, but the main attention was paid to the western history of ideas. Later, the magazine, in an attempt to correct this situation, began to attract independent analysts who specialize in China , Latin America and Southeast Asia .
The magazine is published quarterly in January, April, July and October. Since 2006 it has been published by the University of Pennsylvania Press . Also electronically presented in Project MUSE , early numbers are available through JSTOR .
