History
The city of Pereyaslav (since 1943 - Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky ) has a long and distinguished history [1] . According to Russian chronicles, it was the third largest city of the Old Russian state - after Kiev and Chernigov. And the Pereyaslav principality played an important role as a southern outpost on the way of raids by the steppe nomads in Kiev .
In the early 1950s, the local history museum occupied only three rooms in the ancestral home of a friend of Taras Shevchenko , a local doctor A. Kozachkovsky. Three years later, a new exposition was created, the opening of which took place on April 13, 1954 - to celebrate the anniversary - "300th anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia." In the same year, by a decision of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR, the museum was assigned the III republican category and given the name “Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky State Historical Museum”.
On the basis of this institution and the complex of monuments created by him in 1979, according to the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR , the State Historical and Cultural Reserve was formed, renamed on March 15, 1999 by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to historical and ethnographic [3] .
The status of the national reserve was granted by the Decree of the President of Ukraine of June 1, 1999 [4] .
The first director of the reserve was the Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine, laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, Hero of Ukraine Mikhail Sikorsky (from 1951 to 2008 ).
