New Yuefu (Movement)

The New Yuefu or the Poetry Renewal Movement ( Chinese ex. 新 乐府 п , pinyin : xīnyuèfǔyùndòng , pall .: Xin yuefu yundong ) is the Tang -era movement (618–907) for the reform of poetry led by the poets Yuan Zhen (元稹) and Bo Juiyi (白居易). The ideas of this movement echo the views of Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan , who advocated a return to prose in the "ancient style" (古文 運動). The main difference between the New Yuefu and the Yuefu of the Han era is that music was not a direct component of the new yuefu. The objectives of this movement can be expressed in the words of Bo Juyi from his “Letters to Yuan Zheng ” (Chinese 與 元 九 書).

The origins of the current in the historical context

At the end of the An Lushan Insurgency, China was in a deplorable state, society was plunged into chaos, bureaucracy was mired in corruption. Seeing how the situation worsens day after day, educated people hoped that reforms and the spread of morality would help save a dying country. [2] Such ideas are reflected in the world of literature. So two movements appeared: a return in prose to the "ancient style" (古文 運動) and "The Movement for the Renewal of Poetry." The poets who shared their ideas inherited the traditions of social poetry of Du Fu . They sought in their poems to reflect the suffering of the people and social vices.

Such works were hostilely received by large officials and rich people, and the spread of morality in verses did not find support. [2] The works of this direction are imbued with the spirit of humanity and anxiety for the fate of the homeland. [2]
