Background

After winning the battle of Bratslav, the full crown hetman Jan Sobieski decided to seize the territory between the Southern Bug and the Dniester . September 11, 1671 he sent 2 thousand soldiers to capture Vinnitsa , which was taken at dawn on September 14 . The townspeople and Cossacks, locked up in a Jesuit monastery (there were no other fortifications), offered stubborn resistance. Only after 6 hours of assault, when most of the defenders were killed, the monastery fell. However, 120 Cossacks, hiding under the roof of the church, continued to fight until the morning. When 23 remained alive, they decided to surrender: the centurion and seven bosses were sent to the Bar , the rest were cut off their heads. The city was destroyed, and a significant part of the women and children were captured by soldiers (by order of J. Sobieski they were subsequently freed).

The successful actions of Sobieski contributed to the sabotage committed by Mikhail Khanenko and Ivan Sirko against the Belgorod Tatars and the transfer to his side of Colonel Mikhail Zelensky and Bratslav colonel Pavel Lisitsa.

The Military Council of the Polish command on September 29, 1671 adopted a plan of offensive inland. On October 1, Jan Sobieski set off for Mogilev . Having received information about his approach, O. Gogol on October 3 expressed his readiness to surrender the city. Upon learning that Bratslav surrendered to Hanenko, the crown hetman sent the main forces of the army there, and from 1200 horsemen on October 7 he arrived in Mogilev. Leaving the garrison here, he went to Bratslav. On October 12, he held a meeting under his walls with the participation of M. Khanenko, I. Sirko, M. Zelensky and P. Lisitsi, at which M. Khanenko's proposal to occupy Kalnik was accepted.

Battle

Attempts of the Polish army to seize Kalnik on October 17-18 failed, and Jan Sobieski began his blockade. The soldiers burned out all the surrounding villages and grain fields. Doroshenko sent 1 thousand Cossacks, led by Colonel Yarema Petranovsky and 2 thousand Tatars, who arrived on October 20, to help the residents of the city. [one]

The next day, the Polish cavalry defeated the Tatars under the city. In the battle for the dam near the city of 2000 Tatars were killed or drowned in a deep pond 500. [2] Despite the victory, the Poles failed to capture Kalnik - the Polish army retreats to Bratslav.

Consequences

On October 27, 1 thousand Cossacks held a council in a Polish camp near Ilintsy, which elected a new hetman. They became Mikhail Hanenko . Kleinoda sent by the king were handed to him, although some of those present wanted to see Ivan Sirko in his place. Upon learning that, Nuradin-Sultan Safa-Girey was moving to help Doroshenko, and the expected Lithuanian army would not come to help, Jan Sobieski went to Bratslav, where on November 1 he announced the end of the campaign. Having passed the command to Dmitry Vishnevetsky, he left for Lviv. In turn, the full hetman handed over the leadership of the army to the Kiev cornet Stanislav Vizhitsky.

The invasion of the Poles in Cossack Ukraine and the siege of Bratslav became a challenge for the Ottoman Empire. Already in October, Mehmed IV warned the king not to attack the "Cossack state with all its counties", demanding the withdrawal of troops, threatening to start a war.

At the very end of the year, Doroshenko received substantial help from his Tatar allies: 26,000 Tatars and several thousand Turks arrived. Having received help, Doroshenko proceeded to the reconquest of Podillia. Against those who sided with the Poles voluntarily, he used severe repression. [3]
