Nazo (people)

Nazo , or Teribe (Tjër Di), is an Indian nation in Panama and Costa Rica . Mostly its representatives live in the north-west of Panama in the province of Bocas del Toro, in an area of approximately 1300 square kilometers, which includes the Teribe river basin and partially the San San River.

The number of people is about 3000-3500 people. It is one of the few indigenous peoples of America to which the monarchy continues to exist; in addition, almost all representatives of the people still retain their traditional religion - only very few of Nazos profess Catholicism. Many of them speak Spanish, but their native language is the main language of communication. The monarchy is hereditary, power is transferred from father to son, but in case of dissatisfaction with the monarch, another member of the royal family can nominate himself as a candidate for the throne in the framework of public voting. Nazo's “Kingdom” is not recognized by the Panamanian government, but in reality has relative autonomy.
