According to a review by Stylus Magazine , the disc is a mixture of pop , jazz , ambient , classical music and rock [6] . Spirit of Eden was the latest release of Talk Talk, released by EMI, which stopped working with musicians after low sales of the record. However, the album was well appreciated by music critics.
Following the success of the previous release of The Color of Spring , the EMI record company decided to allocate a large amount of money to record the next record for Talk Talk. Moreover, the recording time was not limited [4] . After completing the recording, the musicians sent a cassette with tracks for the new EMI album, however, after listening to it, the company asked Mark Hollis to rewrite the album material or at least a few songs, fearing that Spirit of Eden would not repeat the success of The Color of Spring [9] , since the group greatly removed from the sound of the previous album [10] . He refused. Having allocated a huge budget for the record, the company paid a lot for it. When Spirit of Eden was released, Hollis announced that there would be no singles and a large-scale tour in support of the album [6] , although in the end the song “I Believe in You” was still the only single.
Spirit of Eden sold worse than the previous albums of the group, and did not repeat the success of The Color of Spring [4] . Despite the commercial failure of the album, in Britain he received silver status [11] .
The album has earned wide acclaim among critics. [12] Pitchfork Media included him in the list of "Best Albums of the 1980s " [13] , and Slant Magazine magazine ranked 56th in his list of "Best Albums of the 80s" [14] .
Words and music of all songs by Tim Freeze-Green and Mark Hollis.
