Biography
Nikolay Vasilenko was born in 1911 in a village named after Petrovsky (now the city of the Settlement of Cherkasy Region ) in a peasant family. He graduated from elementary school, after which he worked at a brick factory in the Settlement, then at the Shevchenko collective farm. In 1939 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He took part in the Soviet-Finnish war. In February 1944, Vasilenko was re-drafted into the army, was a shooter of the 936th Infantry Regiment of the 254th Infantry Division of the 52nd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the crossing of the Prut and the liberation of Romania [1] .
March 28, 1944 Vasilenko crossed the Prut in the area of the village of Kirpitsi (now Victoria ) north of Iasi and immediately entered the battle. Moving forward, he went to Kirpitsi. To eliminate the bridgehead, the enemy launched seven counterattacks by large forces. During their reflection, Vasilenko destroyed about 150 enemy soldiers and officers. On March 31, during the crossing of the Zhizhia River with his machine gun, Vasilenko covered up his crossing. On April 9, 1944, the battalion launched an assault on a powerfully fortified height. In that battle, Vasilenko destroyed a large number of enemy soldiers and officers, dying himself. He was buried in the Victoria area [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 13, 1944, for “courage, bravery and heroism shown in the struggle against the German invaders,” the Red Army soldier Nikolai Vasilenko was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
