The volume of the family is 372 genera and more than 4 thousand species [3] . A distinctive feature of the family is the abundance of biennial monocarpic (that is, blooming only in the last year of life) herbs.
Cabbage is the most important representative of this family for humans.
Botanical Description
The root system is pivotal. There are modifications of the roots - root crops ( radishes , turnips ).
Cabbage leaves are simple, with an alternate arrangement, without stipules . Often there is a basal rosette of leaves ( shepherd's bag , Arabidopsis ). The stalk can be thickened and form an elevated tuber with leaves ( kohlrabi cabbage ).
Actinomorphic flowers , less often zygomorphic , bisexual, with double perianth , four-membered, four sepals , six stamens . Inflorescence is a brush .
Flower formula :
.
The type of fruit is a pod , less often a pod .
Cabbage often stores glucosinolates in vacuoles, and in the cytoplasm, the enzyme myrosinase .
Economic value
The economic importance of cabbage is very great. Among them there are vegetables ( cabbage , turnip , radish, radish), oil plants ( rapeseed , mustard ), medicinal ( shepherd’s bag ), fodder ( turnip ) and spice-flavoring plants ( mustard , horseradish , wasabi ), also decorative ( lunaris) ) and honey plants ( camelina )
