General ( Eng. General ) - before the establishment of the military rank of Field Marshal - the highest military rank in the ground forces of Sri Lanka . It corresponds to the Russian rank of army general , according to NATO classification - OF-9. This title is conferred on the Chief of Defense Staff or, in general, during the solemn retirement of the army commander . A similar practice of conferring this rank upon retirement of an army commander developed in the 1970s, and had the only exception for all these years - in 2009, Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseca became a general without resigning, but was later deprived of ranks and regalia for judicial decision (subsequently restored).
On the pursuit is the coat of arms of Sri Lanka over a crossed sword and a baton, between which there is a rhombus with an inscribed cross (for a field form) or a star (analog of stars on Russian epaulets). By and large, this is a combination of shoulder straps of the Major General and Lieutenant General , since the former has an asterisk in front of a sword and a baton, and the latter has a state emblem.
In the Navy of Sri Lanka, the rank corresponds to the rank of admiral , in the Air Force of Sri Lanka - Air Chief Marshal .
