Religious identity is a form of collective and individual self-awareness, built on the awareness of belonging to a particular religion and forming representations of oneself and the world through appropriate religious dogmas [1] . Religious identity is one of the first forms of human self-consciousness and therefore is at the source of the formation of other types of identities.

Religious Identity Discussions
In the scientific literature it is noted that the concept of religious identity has been used lately and vaguely. Carlo Cardia is limited to understand identity as the preservation of traditions and the use of religious symbolism [2] .
According to A. N. Krylov, religious identity must be understood in the dialectic of its characteristics, which are common and opposite, with a tendency to interchange and complement each other. In one case, religion acts as the content of the identification process. With the help of religious truths, norms and teachings, a person becomes aware of his own identity. Thanks to religion, he finds himself, understands what place he will take in life, and also finds the answer to questions of existential content. On the other hand, religion acts as a tool, a mediator of the identification process. Through religion, a person is aware of his belonging to a certain group, clan, nation, country. Religion serves to preserve and transmit norms and traditions that are important for the identification process [3] .
Some authors identify a combination of religious and ethnicity with religious identity. In analytical works, religious identity is understood as a holistic phenomenon that includes individual and collective self-awareness.
Russian scholars distinguish the following types of religious identity:
- Orthodox identity;
- Islamic identity [4] ;
- Confessional identity (Catholic, Protestant);
- Ethno-religious identity;
- Cultural Religious Identity.
Religious Identity and the Church
The Russian Orthodox Church pays great attention to the preservation and formation of the religious identity of the Orthodox population of Russia. The theme of identity was repeatedly raised by Patriarch Alexy II and Patriarch Kirill . Researchers draw attention to the differences between religious self-identification (cultural religiosity) and religion.
The theme of religious identity is also one of those significant for the last two leaders of the Roman Catholic Church - Pope John Paul II [5] and Benedict XVI .
