Biography
Mikhail Vasenkov was born in 1942 in the city of Kuntsevo (now - within the boundaries of Moscow) [1] .
In January 1976, he arrived in Spain , according to some sources, from Cuba , according to others, from Mexico . March 13, 1976, he arrived from Spain to Peru with a passport of a Uruguayan citizen in the name of Juan José Lázaro Fuentes . He had a letter on the letterhead of a Spanish tobacco company stating that he had been sent on a business trip to learn the local language. After another 2 years, he submitted this letter, a copy of his passport and a copy of the Uruguayan birth certificate to the Ministry of the Interior of Peru and applied for the citizenship of this country. In 1979, his application for citizenship was granted. In 1983, he married a Peruvian journalist, Vicki Pelaez , and in 1985, with her and her son, from her previous man, he moved to New York . There the spouses had a son. Vasenkov-Lazaro has a black belt in karate . In the United States, he entered New York University and defended his doctoral dissertation in philosophy , after which he spent a semester teaching. He also worked as a press photographer, which was convenient for covering up his intelligence activities. According to media reports, shortly before his arrest, he was awarded the title of Major General of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation [2] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (“closed”) dated January 12, 1990, for the courage and heroism shown in the performance of official duties, Colonel Mikhail Anatolyevich Vasenkov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal .
It is not known for certain from what period Vasenkov-Lazaro and his wife began to be monitored, but at least in 2002 their house in Yonkers was tapped, since the FBI counterintelligence agents provided a printout of a recorded conversation in which Lazaro admitted to his wife that he was unhappy in Moscow his reports, since he does not name sources of information in them [2] .
June 27, 2010 was arrested in his own home in Yonkers, New York . American intelligence agencies initially could not prove his connection with Russian intelligence [3] . Vasenkov himself rejected the accusations, insisting on his innocence. According to Kommersant newspaper reporters, Colonel Alexander Poteev , the former deputy head of the C department for work with illegal immigrants, was given to Vasenkova, who came to his cell and invited him to confess to espionage by putting a folder with a file on him on the table in front of him. This forced Vasenkov to give his real name, but to add that he did not intend to say anything else. According to some reports, during interrogations, American investigators applied physical measures to him, breaking his three ribs and leg [3] . At the same time, this version is refuted in the publication of the newspaper Trud, which refers to its sources in the Foreign Intelligence Service [4] [5] . Other media also indicate that the former SVR Colonel A. N. Poteev [6] [7] was the culprit in exposing the group of “Russian spies” in the United States in 2010.
According to the court ruling, Vasenkov was deported to Russia [8] . He currently resides in Moscow. According to foreign media reports, Vasenkov wanted to return to Latin America [9] [10] .
