History

In accordance with the Provision on regional bishops from March 12, 1934 in pursuance of the decree of the Local Council of 1917-1918 on the metropolitan districts, the Provisional Patriarchal Holy Synod formed churches in several dioceses, including a metropolis with the center in Pyatigorsk [1] . The date of the abolition is unknown. Most likely this happened in 1943 during the reorganization of the episcopal departments.

On June 7, 2012, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (Journal No. 51), the Stavropol Metropolis was established, uniting the dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church on the territory of the Stavropol Territory: Stavropol, St. George, and the Piedmont and Kirov Regions of the Pyatigorsk Diocese [2] . The ruling bishop of the Stavropol diocese was appointed head of the metropolis.

Composition

The metropolis consists of three (one partially) dioceses:

  • Stavropol and Nevinnomyssk diocese
  • Diocese of St. George and Praskovey
  • Also part of the parishes of the Pyatigorsk and Circassian dioceses , which is located in the territory of the Stavropol Territory, became part of the metropolis

Metropolitans

Kirill (Pokrovsky) since June 7, 2012
