Biography

Born June 18, 1922 in a peasant family. Ukrainian . He graduated from 7 classes. In 1939 he moved to the city of Gorlovka, Donetsk region of Ukraine . He worked as a mechanic at the Kochegarka mine.

In the Red Army since June 1941 . He graduated from the courses of intelligence miners. On the fronts of World War II from March 1942 . He fought on the Bryansk , Central and 1st Ukrainian fronts. He participated in the liberation of Ukraine and Poland , in battles in Germany .

In offensive battles from January 12, 1945 to February 1, 1945 of the Guard, Senior Sergeant V.G. Petrenko showed exceptional courage and heroism. In the battles for the village of Skshelčice and the crossing on the Charn-Nida River (Poland), V.G. Petrenko, reflecting the counterattacks of superior infantry forces, tanks and armored personnel carriers of the Nazis, knocked out one tank, three armored personnel carriers and destroyed up to 80 enemy officers and soldiers.

When crossing the Oder River, V. G. Petrenko, quickly crossing the west bank and taking up a firing position, accurately aimed to repulse the enemy’s counterattacks, which tried to force our units out of the occupied bridgehead. Having been wounded, Petrenko continued to fire on the enemy, destroying several dozen enemy soldiers.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for the exemplary performance of command missions on the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism of the guard shown, Sergeant Petrenko Vasily Gavrilovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Star ” under the number 4804.

After the war, foreman V. G. Petrenko returned to the city of Horlivka, Donetsk region of Ukraine . He worked as an electrician, a master of industrial training in a vocational school , a master at the Gorlovsky enterprise of electric networks. He died on August 9, 1988 .
