Botanical Description
Low prickly shrubs with a height of 0.5 to 1.5 m, with a long creeping root . The branches are thin, long and brittle. The stem is straight, slightly branching, jointed. Young root shoots (two to three years old) are abundantly covered with acicular fragile spikes.
The leaves are light green, large (up to 35 cm across) with long petioles hollow inside, sharply dentate, shallow five-fingered along the edge. The surface of the leaf and petiole is prickly.
The flowers are small, nondescript, greenish or greenish-yellow in color, collected in a cluster-shaped axillary panicle . The entire inflorescence is covered with rusty hairs.
The fruits are fleshy, juicy, 5 to 12 mm long, red.
It grows in mixed forests, forest edges, burnt areas, clearings.
Distribution and habitat
Endemic to the south of Primorsky Krai and the Korean Peninsula .
It grows in high mountain spruce-fir, fir and birch forests.
Medical use
As a medicinal raw material , a rhizome with the roots of a high zamani ( Latin Rhizoma cum radicibus Echinopanacis ) is used, which is collected in the autumn after the growing season , thoroughly cleaned from the ground, cut into pieces up to 35 cm and dried. Shelf life of raw materials is 3 years [2] .
The tincture of zamanihi high, similar in action to the tincture of ginseng , is used as a stimulant for various forms of asthenia , depression , hypotension .
The main biologically active substances are saponins : echinoxosides , lignans , essential oil , coumarins , flavonoids [2] .
Guard Status
Vulnerable view. It is listed in the Red Books of Russia and the Primorsky Territory. The causes of extinction are low seed production, collection for medicinal purposes, forest fires.
