Airfields of Antarctica. In Antarctica, there are about 40 airfields. All of them have a runway of ice (blue ice runway), or snow. Some of them accept international flights from South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. These include Amundsen-Scott airfield, Teniente Marsh airport , Wilkins , Pegasus field , the airfield of Novolazarevskaya station, as well as some others.
One of the best and most technically equipped airfields in Antarctica is the airfield of Novolazarevskaya station (NOVO) - the main transport hub of the DROMLAN network, a true international “airport”. Belongs to the Russian Federation, rented and fully serviced by the South African company Antarctic Logistics Center International. An ice strip of 2900 meters in length allows receiving aircraft of all classes. Such as IL-76, Boeing 727 (any modifications), Boeing 737 (any modifications), Gulfstream 500, Hercules C-130, BT-67 and others less class. During the navigation season, the airfield is equipped with a course-glide path instrumental approach system. There are all the necessary communication systems. This is the only airport in Antarctica that has a certificate issued by the Federal Air Transport Agency. Regular charter flights (about 10 a year) are carried out by IL-76-90VD aircraft (owned by the Russian airline Volga-Dnepr) from Cape Town International Airport, an ALCI-registered operating company in South Africa (www.alci.co.za) with headquarters in Cape Town ( South Africa), as part of the international logistics project DROMLAN (Dronning Maud Land Air Network). Also, this company carries out regular intercontinental flights on BT-67 aircraft. There are chartered tourist flights outside the schedule. The airdrome has a developed infrastructure and is able to receive and accommodate both transfer passengers of DROMLAN flights and tourists. There is a dining room, residential modules with shower blocks. Seasonal staff and visitors to the airfield are provided with Internet, satellite television (2 Russian channels), and satellite telephone communications. Travel packages within which you can visit this airdrome are sold by The Antarctic Company ( http://www.antarctic-company.info/ ) and White Desert ( http://www.white-desert.com/ ). Tours are not cheap.
Directions of non-stop flights serviced from the Novolazarevskaya aerodrome: Cape Town (South Africa), aerodromes of the Antarctic stations Troll, Progress, Sanae, Princess Elizabeth, Neumaer, Halle and others.
