Life and work
He was a student of the artist Bernard van Orley , who recommended that he continue his studies in Italy. M.Coxi lives and works in Rome from 1530 to 1539. Returning to his homeland, in 1539 he became a member of the professional association of artists - the guild of St. Luke . By 1542 he moved to Brussels, and since 1546 he served as the court artist of the Queen of Hungary and the Czech Republic Maria of Hungary .
M.Coxie was a very prolific artist. He painted portraits and frescoes, works of biblical and historical subjects, created paintings for churches on the boards (for example, for the Mechelen Cathedral of St. Rumold and the Brussels Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula ). Until now, he is known as a talented copyist of paintings by Rogier van der Weyden and Jan van Eyck .
