Teaching of Kerinth

Cerinth distinguished between Christ and Jesus as two distinct individuals. Irenaeus of Lyons in his work “Five Books Against Heresies” writes about Kerinf as follows:

“ ... the world was not created by the first God, but by a force that is far from this superior first principle and does not know anything about the Supreme God. Jesus, he says, was not born of a virgin, (for it seemed to him impossible); but like all other people, there was the son of Joseph and Mary , and was distinguished from all by justice, prudence and wisdom. And after baptism Christ descended upon Him from the higher first principle in the form of a dove ; and then He proclaimed the unknown Father and performed miracles; finally, Christ withdrew from Jesus, and Jesus suffered and rose again; Christ, being spiritual, remained a stranger to suffering ”( Irenaeus I, 26 ).
