Two-time world champion in correspondence (1983-1984 and 1999).
He was among the leading Estonian chess players in full-time competitions. He achieved the highest sporting achievements in the correspondence game: the winner of the 9th World Championship (1977-1983), the European Championship as part of the USSR national team (1973-1983), and the participant in the semi-finals of the Olympiads (1968-1972 and 1972-1977) in the 2- th Olympic team of the USSR.
The game of Yima is distinguished by a good knowledge of chess theory and the ability to wage a tactical struggle.
