Roy Wallis was a representative of an impressive generation of students of Brian Wilson at Oxford University [1] . His doctoral dissertation was devoted to the study of Scientology and later formed the basis of the monograph “ The Road to Full Freedom "Where he first demonstrated his characteristic skill to perceive and simplify a large amount of heterogeneous material and fruitfully reworked the works of the theologian Helmut Richard Niebuhr (typology" sect - denomination - church "), adding definition of the boundaries of cults [1] [6] [7] [8 ] ] .
Roy Wallis argued that in terms of typological differences, we are mainly interested in two simple questions [1] :
- the extent to which ideology considers itself to be the only correct or only legitimate (and not one of the pluralistic points of view);
- the extent to which ideology is considered acceptable and respected (rather than deviant ) in the surrounding society.
The study of new religious movements led Wallis to the creation of his main work, “ The Elementary Forms of New Religions” ( eng. The Elementary Forms of the New Religious Life ). Wallis introduced new criteria for the distinction between peace-affirming ( world-affirming ), peace-tolerant ( world-accommodating ) and world-rejecting ( new world-rejecting ) new religious movements [1] [9] .
Wallis also developed the theory of factionalism and heresies, expounding it in 1979 in his work “Salvation and Rebellion” ( Eng. Salvation and Protest ), further the theory of charisma in the collection “ Millennialism and Charisma” ( eng. Millennialism and Charisma ), published by the publishing house Queen's University in Belfast in 1982 [1] .
Roy Wallis is also known as an ardent supporter of the secularism of the state , which is reflected in his criticism of the theory of religion of Rodney Stark and William Bainbridge , as well as theorist delimitation of science, religion and medicine. He is the author and co-author of three collections of articles on this topic, with which he gave a lot of time and effort: “Marginal Medicine” ( 1976 ), “Culture and Treatment” ( English Culture and Curing ) ( 1978 ) and “ On the sidelines of science ”( Eng. On the Margins of Science (Sociological Review Monographs) ( 1979 ) [1] .
After the release of the book The Path to Full Freedom ” In which Wallis conducted a thoughtful and in-depth study of the Church of Scientology , he was subjected to moral and judicial attacks from this organization [10] . The Church of Scientology sent out fake letters, allegedly written by Roy Wallis, to his colleagues, which reported on his involvement in all sorts of scandals [11] .
In 1977 he left the University of Stirling to take the chair of the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Queen's University in Belfast , in 1989 and the post of pro-vice chancellor of the university [1] .
