Tagline , tagline (from the English tagline ) - part of the signature of an e-mail containing a saying , quote , anecdote and the like. The term is popularized by Fidonet , where it received its initial distribution.
Tags are widely used for correspondence by e-mail , in Usenet newsgroups , in Fidonet netmail and e-mail . It can be changed manually or by using an email program that randomly selects one text line from an extensive file and makes it one of the signature elements.
In Fidonet, a tagline usually begins with an otto consisting of three dots, followed by a phrase text (separated by a space). Directly behind this line are two other lines. This custom is so popular in Fidonet that many popular mail editors (say, GoldEd + ) highlight in a special color the line preceding the tearline if it starts with three points.
