Location
The television tower is located in the northern part of the Cologne Small Ring Road ( Innere Kanalstraße street), laid along the route of the former Cologne city wall ( de: Festungsring Köln ).
History
The construction of the tower was started in 1978 by the architect [1] and engineer [2] . The tower was commissioned on June 3, 1981 .
At the time of completion, the height of the tower with the antenna was 252.9 m. An observation deck was equipped in the tower’s basket at an altitude of 166 m. Also in the "basket" was a two-story revolving restaurant.
In the early 1990s the tower antenna was replaced with a new one, as a result of which the height of the tower increased to 266.1 m.
On the eve of the new year 1994, a stampede occurred in the restaurant's dance zone, panic began. This was the reason that it was decided to close the restaurant. Since 1999, the observation deck has been closed to visitors.
In April 2004, to provide digital broadcasting in DVB-T format using helicopters, the antenna was again replaced, while the tower height remained unchanged.
