Biography
Jim Duggan was born into a large family. His father was a police officer. He had three older sisters. Jim grew up in Glen Falls. Back in school, he was considered a great athlete. He played football and basketball well , ran and wrestled . He became the pride of the school, winning the New York State Wrestling Championship in school competitions without weight class restrictions. Before him, no one brought such awards to the school.
Many universities wanted Jim to join them on the football program. Among them are prestigious universities in the states of Pennsylvania and Ohio , but Jim preferred the lesser-known Southern Methodist University, where he was appointed team captain. After college, Jim joined the NFL team - Atlanta Falcons , but was soon released due to a knee injury.
Duggan underwent a serious kidney cancer surgery. Kidney cancer was discovered in Daggan while working at the HAB . His fight against cancer was widely publicized, so Daggan's recovery and return to wrestling was greeted with great warmth by fans and relatives.
His idea of taking the board with him was taken from the 1973 film “ Walking Wide ”, where the main character everywhere carried the same board with him and used it as a weapon. Duggan himself almost never used this board after 1988 , because he most often plays a positive character, and they don’t tend to use weapons. But there were always villains who used this board against him.
In 1987, Duggan was arrested for drunk driving and smoking marijuana .
Duggan claims to have fought in every state of America , as well as in other countries: Australia , Austria , Bahamas , Belgium , Bermuda Triangle , Canada , Dominican Republic , England , France , Germany , Guam , Netherlands , Ireland , Italy , Japan , Poland , Scotland , Spain and Switzerland .
Career
Jim Duggan became a wrestler thanks to Fritz Van Eric. Fritz accidentally met Jim at the graduation party at the university and said that a good wrestler would come out of him. That same summer, Jim began training with Van Eric, and in 1979 made his debut in a match against Gino Hernandez. (In the same year, Jim's mother died). Jim began his career as a negative character. He continued to train at the Dallas Texas Sports Center with Hawaiian promoter Peter Mayviya (Grandfather of the Rock ). Then Daggan was noticed by Vince McMan Sr. , who was then the head of WWF .
After working for some time at WWF, Duggan began to work continuously at Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW). Then Duggan performed under two gimmicks:
- Big Jim Duggan in the USA .
- Prisoner in Hawaii (wore a mask).
After working briefly in Alabama , Jim settled in Texas , where he received his famous nickname "Hacksaw." From 1982 to 1986, he worked at the NWA . Then he played on the Flock of Traitors team with Ted Dibiasi , Matt Born and Mr. Olympia . After Dibias joined the team of Scandor Akbar , Duggan refused to cooperate with him and for the first time in his career became a face. As a positive character, he won the Team Titles with Magnum TA , and then the North American Title. In 1986, Jim became the Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF) Champion, but Terry Gordy soon lost it. Soon, Duggan teamed up with Terry Taylor to win the UWF Team Titles. After losing the match for dismissal, Duggan left the UWF and joined the WWF.
In 1987, Jim signed a contract with WWF. And although he did not receive a single WWF Title, Jim remained a fan favorite for 7 years. While working at WWF, he had to quarrel with wrestlers such as Harley Rice , Haku (whom he won the King of Wrestling title) and Andre Giant . Duggan is the only wrestler who knocked out Andre Gigant . Duggan was the first Battle Royale winner in 1988 .
In the same year, Duggan was at enmity with the “Russian” Nikolai Volkov. Three years later, when Volkov became a positive character, they united in one team. Soon, Duggan was fired from WWF. He was arrested in the same car with his enemy in the ring, Iron Sheikh for possession of cocaine and marijuana. Both were immediately fired from WWF. However, soon Daggan was returned again.
Duggan joined WCW in 1994 . In one of his first matches at WCW, Jim won the United States WWE title against Steve Austin in less than one minute. For all the time working in the WCW, Daggan was very rarely used in the main storylines. He mainly performed on the WCW side show Saturday Night.
Duggan left WCW in 1998 after he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Before leaving, Jim defiantly said goodbye to the fans and even shed a tear on the last show before the operation. Luckily for Daggan, his rehabilitation was successful, so that at the end of 1999 he had already returned to WCW. Under the influence of screenwriters Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara, Duggan had to become a WCW cleaner. Despite such a low role, Jim won the WCW Television Championship Title and became the oldest wrestler to ever win this Title. He defended his title with dignity and remained the last holder of this title.
At the end of his career at WCW, Jim finally became involved in the main storylines. Due to one of them, Duggan abandoned his patriotic gimmick and temporarily sided with the Canadians, led by Lance Storm . This was the last time Duggan played a negative role.
It's funny that Duggan has appeared on the World Wide Wrestling Alliance , formerly known as the NWA Ohio , several times. Later, his name appeared on the lists of leaders of the promotion. But on his website, Duggan began to deny his attitude to this company. He said that he had never signed a contract with her and had never been to WWWA or NWA Ohio at all.
Jim Duggan returned to WWE on his Arrival Home show on October 3, 2005, along with some former WCW and WWE employees. This comeback ended with a brawl with Rob Conway. Due to a fan vote, Jim was chosen as the partner of Eugene in a team match on Forbidden Tuesday November 1, 2005 . Duggan, along with Eugene, opposed Rob Conway and Tyson Tomko. After that, he began to quarrel with Edge and Lita .
In January 2009, he returned to WWE at Royal Rumble under 29 and the Big Show was thrown out. In January 2012, he returned to WWE at the Royal Rumble match at number 19. He was thrown out by Cody Rhodes .
