Biography
Born October 8, 1908 in the family of a peasant. Ukrainian . He graduated from primary school. He worked on the farm.
In the Border Troops of the OGPU of the USSR since 1930 , he served as a Red Army man in the 14th border detachment of the OGPU troops of the Byelorussian SSR . After graduating from the junior commanding school in this detachment in 1932, he became the detachment commander and later the platoon commander of the maneuverable group. In 1934 he was transferred to the Internal Troops of the NKVD of the USSR and served in parts of the Main Directorate of Correctional Labor Camps . In 1939 he was appointed commander of a platoon of the 1st motorized rifle regiment of the NKVD troops of the Byelorussian SSR.
Member of the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939–40 , on December 29, 1939 he was appointed commander of a machine-gun platoon. Junior Lieutenant Dmitry Petrenko distinguished himself in January 1940 . His platoon as part of the company captured an important height in the Pitkäranta direction. After the death of the company commander and political leader, D. F. Petrenko took command of the company. Being surrounded for forty days, the company repulsed all the attacks of the enemy, caused him great damage in manpower. In one of the battles, when leaving the encirclement, on January 21, 1940, the brave commander died a brave death, fulfilling military duty to the end.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 26, 1940, for exemplary performance of combat missions of command on the front of the struggle against the Finnish White Guard and at the same time showing courage and heroism to Junior Lieutenant Petrenko Dmitry Filippovich, the title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded posthumously with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal .
He was buried in a mass grave in the city of Pitkyaranta [1] .
