Qum ( Persian قم - Qom ; azerb. Qum ) is one of the 31 provinces ( stop ) of Iran , with an area of 11,526 km². The administrative center is the city of Qom . The province was formed from part of Tehran Ostan in 1995 . Area - 11 526 km² [1] . As of 2006, the population was 1,046,737 people [1] , of which the urban population was 91.2%. The main populations are Persians , Azerbaijanis , and Lures .

Content
Geography
The climate is desert and semi-desert. Little rain, dry. The region is unfavorable for agriculture, especially in the area of salt lakes. There are two large salt lakes in the region - Hauze Sultan and Namak.
History
Qom existed long before the adoption of Islam. Archaeological finds date back to the fifth millennium BC. Even in pre-Islamic times, Qom was a big city.
The second caliph Omar occupied the center of Qom. In 644 - 645, Abu Musa Ashgari controlled Qom, in which conflicts broke out between the Arabs and the local population.
Kum was the place where the Alawids hid from persecution by the ruling caliphs. Caliph Al-Mamun stormed Qom in 825 , defeated a city with many victims.
In 831, the inhabitants of Qom rebelled, the uprising was severely crushed. Only during the Buid dynasty did the representatives of the Alavids gain power in the region, and Qom began to flourish.

The province (ost) of Kum consists of one shakhrestan, which is divided into 5 districts (bakhsh).
Qom today
Today, Qom is considered the most important world center of Shiism , where many pilgrims flock.
