New Year’s address to the people - in some countries, the traditional personal appeal of the head of state or head of government to citizens, usually broadcast on New Year’s Eve on television . The address usually contains New Year's greetings, a brief summary of the outgoing year and an overview of the upcoming prospects.

New Year's address by the head of state in different countries
Austria
In Austria , the President addresses the people on New Year's Day, and the chancellor’s appeal is broadcast on a national holiday on October 26.
Armenia
Since 2019, the Prime Minister has been making a New Year’s address to the people in Armenia in Armenia since 2019. Prior to this, since the independence of this country, the New Year’s address was made by the president of this republic.
Azerbaijan
In Azerbaijan, the New Year’s address is traditionally annually made by the president of this country in the state, Azerbaijani language.
Belarus
In Belarus , the New Year’s address for 24 years has been the acting president of the Republic of Belarus , Alexander Lukashenko . Every year he touches on a topic for speech. For example, on December 31, 2003 his speech was called “Time is a Bird”, and in 2016 the theme of his speech was “Still Ahead” [1] . In the period from 1994 to 2012, New Year's greetings took place on the territory of the Residence of the President of the Republic of Belarus in Minsk , and after the construction of the Palace of Independence was completed on December 31, 2013, the greetings took place on its territory.
On December 31, 2017, instead of the usual entry with administrative centers, the main quotes and moments with Alexander Lukashenko in 2017 were shown.
UK

In 1923, the Director General of the BBC , John Reith, was invited King George V to address the people at Christmas, but the idea was rejected by the king. However, Reith insisted on his idea, and in 1932, George V, from his residence in Sadrinham, recorded a radio message to British citizens. The text of the appeal was written by Rudyard Kipling . Since then, British kings and queens have performed Christmas greetings annually, with the exception of 1936 and 1938. ( George VI, who ruled from December 1936 to February 1952, suffered from stuttering from the age of 7). In 1957, the first Christmas address of Queen Elizabeth II was shown on television.
Germany
In Germany , since 1970, the Chancellor has been addressing the New Year. The federal president , formally considered the head of state, addresses the people at Christmas . From 1949 to 1969, the opposite happened. In 1952, the New Year’s address was first broadcast on television. A curious incident occurred on December 31, 1986, when the ARD television channel broadcast last year's appeal by Helmut Kohl . According to the leadership of the channel, this happened by mistake, and on January 1, 1987, the ARD showed the Chancellor’s correct appeal.
Kazakhstan
In Kazakhstan, the president of this state traditionally addresses with tele-congratulations, mixing his address in Kazakh and Russian.
Kyrgyzstan
In Kyrgyzstan, the president of the republic addresses the people, also mixing his speech in Kyrgyz and Russian, since, like in neighboring Kazakhstan, the Russian language in this country has official status.
DPRK
On January 1, 2013, BBC News reported that the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, for the first time in 19 years, made a New Year televised address to citizens [2] .
Russia
In Russia, the President of the Russian Federation speaks with New Year's address.
Tajikistan
Since the mid-2000s, in Tajikistan, the president of this state has been addressing the people with New Year’s address in Tajik.
Turkmenistan
In Turkmenistan, the President of this country in Turkmen addresses the people on New Year's Eve.
Uzbekistan
In Uzbekistan , during the reign of Islam Karimov in 1989-2016, the president of this country did not make a New Year’s television appeal to the people. The speaker of the state read out the announcer on New Year's Eve. After Shavkat Mirziyoyev came to power, the tradition of direct New Year’s television appeal to the people began. The president first congratulates the people in Russian, and then, a few minutes before the new year, addresses in Uzbek.
Ukraine
In Ukraine , the New Year’s address is addressed by the President of Ukraine. The greatest number of times, ten, Leonid Kuchma spoke with congratulations. In 2003, his appeal was removed with his grandson and a dog.
In response to the last New Year’s address to the people of Viktor Yanukovych on December 31, 2013, the people’s appeal to the President was first published [3] [4] .
