Mackay spent his football career at clubs such as the Scottish Heart of Midlothian , the English Tottenham Hotspur , Derby County and Swindon Town . As part of Tottenham Hotspur, according to the results of the 1960/61 season, he designed a “ golden double ”, becoming the champion of the country [6] and the owner of the national Cup [7] . Two years later, Dave contributed to the London team in winning the Cup Winners Cup [8] . In 1969 , already a Derby County player, Mackay was awarded the Football Player of the Year award by British journalists (separately from Manchester City representative Tony Beech ) [9] .
In the period from 1957 to 1965, Mackay defended the colors of the national team of Scotland , spent 22 matches in it, scored four goals [10] . A participant in the 1958 world championship , which was held in Sweden .
After the career of a football player, Mackay became a coach - he led a number of English teams, teams from the Middle East , as well as the Qatar team . With the Derby County, which he headed from 1973 to 1976, in 1975 became the champion of England [11] .
In 1998, Mackay entered the symbolic list of “ 100 legends of the Football League ”, compiled by the Football League of England in honor of the 100th anniversary of the country's top division [12] . In 2002 and 2004, Mackay was included in the English [13] and Scottish [14] Football Halls, respectively.

Football career
Club career
He was born on November 14, 1934 in the capital of Scotland - the city of Edinburgh [15] .
From early childhood, Mackay was fond of football. He played for various youth teams, such as Slateford Athletic , Newtongrange Star and Hutchinson Vale . [16] At the age of 14, he took part in the final match of the national Cup for schoolchildren, which was held at Taynkasl - the arena of Dave's favorite club: Hart of Midlotian [17] [18] . Representatives of the "Harts" immediately noted the talent of Makai and invited him to continue his sports education at his Academy. After consulting with his parents, Dave accepted the proposal of "hearts" [17] . As a player in the Hart of Midlothian youth squad, Mackay served for two years in the sapper part of the British army [17] .
Makai's debut in the first Harts roster took place on November 7, 1953, when his team at the home stadium lost to Clyde with a score of 1: 2 as part of the national championship tournament [19] . Altogether, Mackay played for Edinburgh for six seasons [20] . During this time, he was entrusted with the captain's armband of the team, he won the national championship [21] , the Scottish Cup [22] and twice the League Cup [23] [24] . The successful 1957/58 championship season also brought Macaya and Hearts one more achievement - having scored 132 goals in the championship [21] , the maroon set a British record for the number of goals in the league in one football year [25] .
In March 1959, Mackay was bought for 32 thousand pounds sterling by the English club Tottenham Hotspur [18] . He quickly became the leader of the Spurs and was soon elected captain of the London team. Under the leadership of the Scotsman, Tottenham won many different trophies in the early 60s. According to the results of the 1960/61 season, they scored a “ golden double ”, becoming the country 's champions [6] and owners of the national Cup [7] . The following season, the Tottenham Hotspur again won the FA Cup [26] , and a year later the Londoners won the Cup Winners Cup [8] , becoming the first English team to achieve such success in the European arena. Earlier, Mackay was seriously injured - on December 10, 1963, in a guest match against Manchester United , he broke his leg in a clash with the defender of the “Red Devils” Noel Cantwell [15] [27] . Many, including doctors, predicted the end of the Scotsman’s career [18] , but the midfielder was still able to return to the field nine months after the incident [27] . In the first match after the cure, which was the meeting with the Shrewsbury Town , Makai again broke the same left leg [27] . But this time, the Scot's health helped him recover.
On August 20, 1966, an interesting episode occurred in the match between Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United . Peacock player Billy Bremner , known throughout Britain for his hooligan and unsportsmanlike antics, specially hit Makai on the left, only cured, leg [27] . Dave, also known for his stiffness on the field, approached his opponent and, grabbing him by the collar of his T-shirt, explained that he was wrong. From the recollections of eyewitnesses and participants in the episode:
Alan Mullery , former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and England :
I still have before my eyes a picture of how Dave with one hand tears off Bremner, the evil terrier from Leeds, from the lawn. At that moment I was happy that I was playing with Mackay on the same team [27] .
Billy Bremner:
... if you saw Dave Mackay playing, you know that you can only get him from behind! No one dared to face him ... Dave grabbed me by the throat and explained what he would do with me until the end of the match. I was lucky that he never had the chance to take revenge. I simply did not give him such an opportunity, because until the very final whistle I appeared only in those parts of the field where there was no Makai. I am not a suicide [27] .
Dave Mackay:
It all started with a throw-in from the side. I held Billy, and when the ball was thrown at him, I pushed him in the back. I didn't even hit him, but it was a clear foul. Well, then he answered me. ... he did it on purpose, he knew that I had twice broken my left leg, but still hit me on it! I grabbed him by the scruff and lifted it above the lawn with one hand. Our faces - mine, distorted with rage, and his, expressing fear and remorse - almost touched [27] [28] .

The conflict was recorded by photographer Monte Fresco, and the image instantly became very popular in the UK [27] . According to Makai, a photograph of the confrontation has long adorned the office of his close friend - the famous coach Sir Alex Ferguson [1] [17] .
In 1967, Mackay led Tottenham to victory in yet another FA Cup [29] . For “spurs,” Macai played until the end of the 1967/68 season [15] . In 2003, coach Brian Clough named Mackay the best Tottenham player in club history [30] .
In 1968, the same Klaf, who was then a mentor at Derby County , persuaded Makai to go to the club [18] . The transfer amount was five thousand pounds [15] . In the very first season, with significant participation from Makayaa, Derby won the First English League tournament and won the right to play in the top division for the next season [31] . According to the results of the same season, Mackay (together with the representative of Manchester City , Tony Beech ) was recognized as “ Player of the Year according to English journalists ” [9] [18] . In his last season with Derby (1970/71), the Scot helped Derby win the title of national champion [32] .
Mackay changed his team in May 1971, becoming a player at Swindon Town Club [16] . Transition Dave cost 20 thousand pounds [16] . After leaving Fred Ford's coaching bridge, Town , Mackay was appointed playing coach of the Reds, and soon announced the end of his football career [16] .

Coaching career
In 1971, Mackay became the playing coach of Swindon Town Club [16] . More than a year later, Dave left Robins to head the Nottingham Forest team [40] . The Scot remained a mentor to the foresters until October 1973 , when he replaced Brian Clough, who was dismissed from the former Derby County club on the coaching bridge [18] . The first season under the leadership of Makai brought the club third place in the national championship of England [41] . Already in the next football year, Mackay led the “County” to the gold medals of the national championship [11] . The 1975/76 season did not end so triumphantly for Derby - in the championship of England they finished fourth [42] , lost in the semifinal of the national Cup Manchester United [43] and lost in the 1/8 finals of the European Cup to Madrid Real Madrid [44] . Mackay was fired in November 1976 after an extremely weak start in the national championship [18] . It is noteworthy that the newspapers with the headline “Mackay sacked” ( English “Mackay sacked” ), dedicated to the resignation of the coach, were used in the filming of the British sitcom “Porridge”, which featured a prison guard named Makay [45] .
From March 1977 to August 1978, Mackay led the Walsall without much success [40] . Then the Scotsman left for the Middle East for nine years, where he headed a number of clubs [18] . In 1987, Mackay returned to the UK, where he accepted the Doncaster Rovers team [40] . He stayed at the post for two seasons, after which he moved to Birmingham City [40] . According to the results of the 1988/89 football year, “citizens” for the first time in their history fell below the Second Division of the country [46] , and Mackay was given the task of returning the “blue” to its previous level. The Scot was unable to meet the expectations of the leadership and in January 1991 left the Birmingham [40] . After that, Makai again went to the Middle East - there he led the Egyptian Zamalek and the national team of Qatar . Upon his retirement in 1997 from the post of head coach of the national team, he announced the end of his career in big football [18] .
