Kalts, Juraj

Juraj (Jurica) Kalts ( Serbohorv. Јuraј Kalts, Juraj Kalc ; 1908–1942 ) is a Yugoslav Croatian soldier, participant of the Spanish Civil War and the Yugoslav People’s Liberation War. The national hero of Yugoslavia (posthumously).

Born April 22, 1908 in Štinjan (near Pula ) in a working-class family. On the eve of the Italian occupation with his family he moved to Zagreb . After the war, he worked in a factory where he joined a workers' union that promoted Marxism. In 1937, a volunteer went to Spain, joined the international brigade, which participated in the civil war on the side of the Republicans. In the battle of the Ebro was seriously wounded, received another wound in the Aragon operation. In December 1938, the Ministry of Popular Defense of the Spanish Republic awarded the Fighter Medal for Spain. In the same year, adopted in the CPU.

In early 1941, during the war with Germany, he formed a partisan detachment in the city of Sisak, together with the party leadership conducted operations in Banovina . After the arrival of the saboteur Ivan Harish Kalts joined his group and began active combat activities in Banovina and Bosanskaya Krajina.

He died in July 1942 during the Battle of Kozar . By the decree of Josip Broz Tito on September 26, 1973, he was posthumously awarded the title of the National Hero of Yugoslavia.
