This airbase was used by the Royal Air Force under the name RAF Minneriya during World War II from 1942 to 1946. In 1978, the base, due to the unstable situation in the northern and eastern regions, was restored and updated, and it became part of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Now the base is large enough to accommodate several Air Force units and simultaneously use it as a civilian airport. An important strategic location allows you to support other air force bases and other Sri Lankan army units in the north and east of the island.
Today it is the fourth largest airport in the island with the third longest runway . [one]
The 7th helicopter squadron and the 9th assault helicopter squadron , equipped with Bell ( 212 and 206 ) and Mi ( Mi-24 and Mi-35 ) helicopters , are based at the airbase. Also within the base there is a depot of supplies and services of the Sri Lanka Air Force No. 2 . This unit is designed to supply air camps in the north and east of the island.
