Biography
From 1905 to 1907 he studied law at the University of Munich . In 1911, as a volunteer, he joined the Munich Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant , but in 1913 he resigned and joined the Allianz insurance company. A participant in the First World War from its first days, after being wounded in 1917, was sent to the reserve with the rank of captain . And in the same year he became a member of the Board of Allianz, and from 1921 to 1933 he headed the company as CEO. He was a supporter of the policy of rapprochement with the Nazis, repeatedly supplied large sums of Nazi leaders.
In the spring of 1933, Schmitt joined the NSDAP , and this year he was appointed vice president of industry and trade in Berlin . June 30, 1933 appointed Reich Minister of Economics. In August 1933, he was also appointed to the post of plenipotentiary representative of Prussia in the federal government. In October 1933 he became a member of the Prussian State Council. In August 1934, removed from work and only in 1935 received the post of chairman of the board of AEG AG and the German gas continental company in Dessau . In 1933 he became a member of the honorary SS, a member of the " Circle of Friends of the Reichsfuhrer SS " and in 1939 he received the rank of Brigadeführer SS. In 1937 he took up the post of General Director of the Munich Re insurance company and remained in this post until 1945 .
After the war, he was arrested by the American authorities and subjected to denazification . After a series of trials, 1949 was released. He was a member of the Supervisory Boards of a number of large enterprises in Germany .
