ROSA Linux (pronounced “Rosá” ) is a line of distributions of the Linux operating system (originally based on Mandriva ), developed by the Russian company STC IT ROSA. OpenMandriva Lx [5] and MagOS Linux projects are based on ROSA Linux . The lineup includes the server version of ROSA Server and the desktop version of ROSA Desktop. For each version, freely available editions are available, as well as protected versions built on their basis, certified by the FSTEC of Russia and the Russian Ministry of Defense [6] .

History and Development
In 2007 - 2010 , the stages of research, prototyping, development of tools and design took place [7] .
The free desktop version of the distribution kit for the home is called Desktop Fresh Rn, where n is the version number. The long-running version is called Rosa Enterprise Desktop Xn (formerly Marathon), where n is the version number.
The distribution for the servers is called Rosa Enterprise Linux Server (RELS).
The main products of the company are distributions certified by the FSTEC and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, which bear the names of metals - “Cobalt”, “Nickel”, “Chrome”, their support and layout by software. These options are not in the public domain.
A mobile OS version for ARM processors is being developed [8] .
Initially, the ROSA group of companies was formed. 02/18/2010 CJSC ROSA was registered [9] . August 10, 2011 a subsidiary of ROSA LAB LLC was registered [10] . 03/11/2012 created by STC IT ROSA LLC [11] . As a result of the reorganization of the group of companies in 2014, ROSA CJSC and ROSA Lab LLC were liquidated [12] [13] [14] . Currently, the development of the ROSA OS line is concentrated in the NTC IT ROSA LLC (Scientific and Technical Center for Information Technologies Russian Operating Systems).
Features
KDE is used as the main graphical desktop environment . At different times distributions were released, including by the community, with the GNOME, LXDE, LXQt environments, but they spend less time and quality assurance.
The distribution uses its own development:
- ABF (Automatic Build Farm) [15] is a distributed environment for continuous development and assembly based on the Git version control system. ABF is designed as a structural facade for private (distribution-dependent) technical processes. This approach allows adding distributions on various package bases to ABF with a minimum entry threshold, without large-scale changes in package databases and assembly technologies. The single external logic supported by ABF provides the ability to quickly exchange functionality between groups of developers from base and derivative distributions and between different base distributions, and also accelerates the appearance of new application functionality from external providers in distributions. The OpenMandriva project [16] borrowed the ABF build environment.
- ROSA Hardware DB [17] - database of tested equipment;
- RocketBar - a panel for quickly launching applications with the ability to switch between them;
- SimpleWelcome - a single launch point for applications grouped by functionality;
- TimeFrame is a content visualization tool that allows you to track activity and find documents and files by specific dates.
- StackFolder - an applet that allows you to organize quick access to the most used directories and files (included in KDE 4.10 by default);
- Klook - a utility for quickly viewing a group of files (QuickLook analogue in Mac OS X , by default in KDE 4.10);
- ROMP - multimedia player based on MPlayer and SMPlayer ;
- ROSA Software Center - application installation center;
- Upstream Tracker [18] - tracking and analysis of compatibility changes in Linux libraries;
- Kernel ABI Tracker [19] - analysis of changes in the Linux kernel.
Starting with the release of Rosa Marathon 2012, distributions are assembled in an in-house assembly environment.
Since 2011, the technical journal "Dew Point" has been published [20] , in which you can read about other proprietary developments in the distribution.

Opinions
LinuxBSDos.com reviewed ROSA Desktop Fresh R2 with GNOME [37] . The blog wrote:
ROSA Desktop Fresh is expected to have the latest software, but ROSA Desktop Fresh R2 GNOME did not match this. Instead of GNOME 3.10, the latest stable release of the GNOME 3 desktop, you get GNOME 3.8.4.
LinuxBSDos.com also reviewed the same version with KDE [38] , and the blog also has reviews for the earlier version, Fresh and Marathon 2012 [39] [40] .
In October 2012, Dedoimedo wrote a review on ROSA Marathon 2012 [41] :
ROSA is a pretty elegant distribution with a simple, clean layout, several chic icons, window-like decorations and a stylish menu. In general, you will be tempted to guess which desktop environment you work in, since the configured KDE relies on more similar GNOME features.
Dedoimedo also wrote a review on ROSA Desktop Fresh R7 [42] :
ROSA R7 Desktop Fresh is an interesting distribution. The distribution has a unique, its own ability and identity, and it combines the old, proven, and not very proven concepts from Mandriva with modern technology and appearance. The end result is quite “polar,” or rather, “bipolar.” You will love him, or hate him. The functionality is reasonable, everything I tried worked.
Jesse Smith reviewed ROSA Desktop Fresh 2012 for DistroWatch Weekly [43] :
Booting from the disk brings up a menu asking if we want to start the ROSA environment in real time or to start the distribution system installer. There is a third option, which is booting from the local hard drive, and I was surprised to find that booting from the local drive is the default option. This really matters a lot because it means that if we install the distribution kit, we forget to remove the drive (or USB drive) that we will load into the local ROSA installation. Failure to start the desktop leads us to a series of screens with a request to read the distribution license agreement, set our time zone and confirm the layout of our keyboard. From there we got to the KDE desktop. The theme is bright, and the background is nice, light blue. At the bottom of the screen we find the application menu, some quick launch icons and a task switch. One of the first things I did was find the system installer and try to run it. When I clicked on the system installer icon, a pop-up window appeared that simply said “password is invalid” and the installer is closed. Given this technique, I decided to restart the computer and try to start the system installer from the boot menu.
Smith also reviewed the version of Fresh R9 [44] .
