Description

Girl (fragment of the painting "Umbrellas")

The picture shows people on a Parisian street. Many of them are with umbrellas, but not all - apparently, the rain has just ended or is just beginning. On the left side in the foreground is a young woman with a basket, and a little behind her, on the right side, a woman with two girls, the smaller of which (like a woman with a basket) looks directly at the viewer. The composition of the picture resembles a photograph - in particular, incomplete, cropped figures of people along the edges of the canvas. This technique was popular with the impressionists of that time [3] .

The people on the right side of the picture are painted in a soft, airy impressionist style, while the woman and man on the left side have more distinct outlines. X-ray analysis of the picture showed that initially all the figures were painted in the same style. Then, after several years, Renoir made significant changes in the left side of the picture, practically without changing its right side. In particular, the clothes of a young woman (in the initial version, she was in a different dress and in a hat, which was later removed by the artist) underwent a significant change - in addition to confirmation by X-ray analysis, the change in clothes also corresponded to a rapidly changing fashion [3] .

History

In 1892, the painting was bought from Renoir by the famous Marchand Paul Durand-Ruel , and then was sold to them by the Irish collector and art dealer Hugh Lane , the creator of the Dublin Gallery bearing his name ( Dublin City Gallery "The Hugh Lane" ). After Hugh Lane died in 1915 during the sinking of the ocean liner Lusitania by a German submarine , in 1917 the painting Umbrellas (along with 38 other paintings) was transferred to the Tate Gallery according to his will, and from there transferred to 1935 The London National Gallery , where it has since been located [4] .

There are some disagreements about Hugh Lane 's will. Shortly before his fateful journey at Lusitania in 1915, Hugh Lane wrote a codicill (an additional testament to his will), in which he re-placed these paintings in the Dublin gallery. However, he did not manage to confirm the change of his will in the presence of witnesses. As a result, despite all attempts to recognize (at least moral) the right of Ireland to these paintings, they were transferred to London by law [5] .
