History and Description
In 1883, Renoir painted three paintings depicting dancing couples — Dance in the City , Dance in the Bougival , and Dance in the Village. In contrast to the earlier picture of the artist's Ball in Moulin de la Galette (1876), where many dancing couples were depicted, in each of these paintings the artist personifies the plot and concentrates on one pair, writing out all the details [3] [4 ] .
The painting depicts a couple dancing on the open terrace of the restaurant, against the background of chestnut trees. To the right of the dancers there is a table, covered with a tablecloth, at which they, apparently, were sitting before the dance [5] . The woman who posed for the picture is Alina Charigot ( Aline Charigot ), Renoir’s future wife, and the posing man was Paul Lhôte [5] [6] - Renoir’s close friend, adventurer, journalist and writer [7] .
From April 26 to July 17, 2006, the painting “Dance in the Village” was exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow (in the building on Krymsky Val ), as part of the exhibition “Masterpieces of the Orsay Museum” dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the State Tretyakov Gallery [8] [9] .
