It originates in the south-east of Garfield County, in the area of the Flat Tops ridge, in the territory of the Routt National Forest. The height of the mouth is 1548 m [3] . It flows first to the north-east to the city of Yampa, and then north to the city of Steamboat Springs, after which it sharply turns west. After that, near the town of Milner, Jampa receives the tributary of the Elk , whose length is 55 km. Continues to flow west along the north side of the William Fork Mountain Range. It flows past the city of Craig and receives a tributary of Little Snake in Moffat County. It flows into the Green River on the territory of the Dinosaur National Monument, near the border with Utah .

In most of its course forms a fairly wide, but shallow channel. It is suitable for small vessels up to the Elk River, however, in the late summer and in years with little rainfall it often becomes non-navigable. The average water consumption is 58.59 m³ / s [2] , but in general it can vary from 17 m³ / s in the summer to 600 m³ / s.
