Biography

Conrad Celtis was born on February 1, 1459 in Wipfeld.

With the name of Konrad Celtis, the most important Neolatian poet in Renaissance Germany, the flowering of sensual, cheerful love lyrics is associated. In an effort to " increase the glory of the fatherland ", hoping that the center of the new culture could move from Italy to Germany, he founded, strengthened, inspired more and more new humanistic communities in different cities, where he conducted scientific and teaching activities.

It was Celtis who put forward the broadest collective work program of the German humanists. He called for collecting, studying and publishing sources covering the history of his native country, its ethnographic and geographical features, and the cultural achievements of different centuries. He advocated the political centralization of Germany, dreaming of a time when the princely feuds would end. Mocking ignorance and vices of the clergy , Celtis defended the need for a close connection between the humanities and mathematical disciplines and the study of nature, and fervently promoted secular education.

Before the reader of his works, Celtis appeared in different, slightly coordinated guises: either as an enthusiastic admirer of ancient classics, as a supporter of renewed Christian piety, painted in the tones of Neoplatonism , then as an apologist for the ancient, supposedly original German, but largely created by the rich poetic imagination of Celtis himself " Druidic religions."

His image in the lyrics turned out to be so multifaceted: in “The Four Books of Love Elegies, respectively, on the Four Sides of Germany ”, the description of the poet’s love experiences was intertwined with the characteristics of female temperaments of various types, complex and multi-valued symbolism, and a finely outlined landscape. The versatile giftedness of Celtis contributed to the breadth of his hobbies, but despite the contradictory views of the poet, the main core of his work has always remained the humanistic mood of his works.

The postage stamp of the Governor General of 1944 is dedicated to Celtis.
