History
Canadian Brass Ensemble ( Eng. Canadian Brass Ensemble ) was formed in 1970; its first members included Stuart Lauton and William Phillips ( trumpets ), Graham Page ( horn ), Eugene Watts ( trombone ) and Charles Dalenback ( tuba ). The next year, Lauton was replaced by Ronald Romm, and the ensemble was renamed Canadian Brass . In 1972, Phillips was replaced by Fred Mills , and in this composition the ensemble performed until 1983. Additional changes in composition occurred in 1983, 1986 and 1996.
The members of the ensemble, originally part of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, soon took up the places of permanent performers of the Banff Higher Education Center . Already in 1972, the breaststroke quintet, with the support of the Canadian government, embarked on the first European tour with Festival Singers . After that, the ensemble toured in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Australia, the USSR and Europe, taking part in major international festivals: Paris and Edinburgh. The quintet performed with leading Canadian symphony orchestras, recording dozens of discs (total sales in the world exceed 2 million). His repertoire includes Renaissance and Baroque music , Christmas music, marches, ragtime and jazz - a total of more than 200 pieces.
During its existence, the team was nominated 13 times for Juneau in various nominations and in 1985 became the winner of this award in the nomination "Instrumentalist of the Year" [1] . In 2000, Canadian Brass became one of the Grammy Award winners for the best collection of classical music. The winning album included one of the quintet's calling cards, Peter Shikele's Hornsmoke. In 2010, the Stars & Stripes: Canadian Brass Salute America quintet album, composed of patriotic songs and marches, spent 8 weeks on the chart of the 25 best classic albums by Billboard magazine and reached second place on this chart.
