Bermaine Stevern spent 59 fights in amateurs, going mainly to title tournaments. Six-time Champion of the Golden Gloves of Quebec Tournament (1999-2005). On January 17, 2015, at the MGM Grand arena in Las Vegas , Bermane fought with mandatory challenger American Deontay Wilder . The fight began with the exchange of blows in the first rounds, the advantage of which was on the side of Wilder. A taller American controlled his opponent with a long jab while Stepern tried to break into close range. In the second, fifth and seventh rounds, Wilder shook Steven strongly, but the champion remained on his feet. As a result, the fight lasted all 12 rounds and ended in Wilder's victory by unanimous decision of the judges - 118: 109, 119: 108 and 120: 107.

Thus, Wilder became the world champion, for the first time in his professional career, failing to knock out an opponent. Wilder later said that in the first half of the fight he injured his right hand, and the day before the fight, his right eye was injured.

After the battle, Bermaine Steverna was taken to the hospital, doctors found out that he had severe dehydration.
