The river originates from the southern tip of Lake Shoshone. It flows in a southerly direction and after about 5 km flows into Lake Lewis, flows out of it and continues to flow south through a steep gorge, almost parallel to the road leading to the south exit of the park. Below Lake Lewis, there are several waterfalls and rapids on the river. It flows into the Snake River shortly after it leaves the national park.
