Western Japan ( 西 日本, に し に ほ ん 、 に し に っ ぽ ん ) is a term for the western part of the Japanese archipelago. Antonym - Eastern Japan .
Legislation limits of Western Japan are not defined.
In a narrow sense, the regions of Kansai , Chugoku and Shikoku are attributed to Western Japan [1] . In a broad sense, it also includes the Fukui Prefecture of the Hokurikudo region , as well as the Kyushu and Okinawa regions [2] .
In geology, the boundary between Western and Eastern Japan is the Itoigawa-Shizuoka tectonic line [3] [4] .
Often, Western Japan means only the Kansai regions with the center of Kyoto and Chugoku with the center of Hiroshima, which are opposed to the Kanto region with the center in Tokyo .
The west and east of the Japanese archipelago are very different in traditional way of life, cuisine and dialects.
Western Japan, in particular the historical provinces of Izumo and Inaba (mainly corresponding to the modern prefectures of Tottori and Shimane ), is the birthplace of traditional Japanese civilization.
