Biography

Sergei Nikolaevich Vasiliev was born on October 10 (September 27, old style ) in 1909 in the county town of Kashin, Tver province of the Russian Empire (now the city is the district center of the Tver region of the Russian Federation ) in a working class family. Russian Received an incomplete secondary education. As a teenager, he moved to Leningrad with his uncle. He sailed in a merchant ship.

In the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Fleet, S. N. Vasiliev was called up by the Leningrad City Military Commissariat in 1932. He served in the Baltic Fleet . Stayed for long service. He served as a boatswain on the destroyer Shattering . In 1939, Petty Officer Vasiliev was transferred to the battalion of protection of the People’s Commissariat of the Navy of the USSR [1] , lived in Kupavna, Moscow Region.

In battles with the Nazi invaders, midshipman S.N. Vasiliev from January 1942 as a political instructor of the company of the 1st Separate Rifle Battalion of the 154th Separate Naval Rifle Brigade as part of the 3rd North-West Attack Army (from January 29, 1942 - Kalinin ) front. Member of the Demyan offensive operation .

In the second half of February 1942, having completed a 250-kilometer march, units of the 154th separate naval brigade entered the valley of the Shubinskaya Robya River . On the morning of February 21, 1942, they liberated the village of Izbitovo [2] . In an effort to completely close the encirclement ring around the Demyan enemy group , the ski battalions of the brigade moved on, but on the approaches to the village of Verkhnyaya Sosnovka [3] on February 23, 1942 [4] they were met by heavy machine-gun fire. Seeing the confusion of his company, political instructor Vasiliev was the first to launch an attack, dragging other fighters along with him. Being wounded, he was the first to burst into enemy trenches. In hand-to-hand combat, S. N. Vasiliev was twice wounded, but, chasing the retreating Germans, with a group of ten marines burst into the trench of the second line of defense, where he again imposed hand-to-hand combat. During the breakthrough of the enemy’s defense, acting with a machine gun, bayonet and grenades, midshipman Vasilyev personally destroyed 25 Wehrmacht soldiers. Continuing to lead the fighters into the attack, Vasiliev was the first to break into the village, but, falling under mortar fire, he was killed by a mine fragment.

Initially, S. N. Vasiliev was buried in the village of Khmeli . Later, his remains were reburied in a mass grave in the village of Korovitchino [5] (now the village of Starorussky district of the Novgorod region of the Russian Federation).

July 21, 1942 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, midshipman Sergei Nikolaevich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously.

Memory

  • A street in the city of Kashin, Tver region of the Russian Federation, is named after the Hero of the Soviet Union S. N. Vasiliev.
  • The name of the Hero of the Soviet Union S. N. Vasiliev is forever included in the lists of the personnel of the 1643th separate guard battalion of the Main Headquarters of the Navy, Moscow.
  • His name is carved on the monument to the fallen soldiers of the Great Patriotic War in Kupavna .
